Three years now since my world collapsed. Although I had already been “riding a train” destined for some type of collision, I didn’t expect the traumatic, abrupt loss of someone so important to me to be the cataclysm.
It’s been quite the grieving process, and I still have ways to go; however, I’m finally feeling strong and able to express my thoughts and feelings a bit more clearly.
As cliché it may sound, I have always escaped in my work - like most artists do. Creating portals of light, and ethereal works, to transcend me out of this world and into a more beautiful one on canvas.
Id lose myself in my process, watching my paints marble and react together, creating magic, reminding me it still exists, even if it meant I had to create it myself.
I recognize trauma puts you into survival mode, and being a mother has given me brute force to keep pushing through. It’s truly incredible how much power motherhood gives us. It’s been quite the emotional experience translating my healing onto a canvas. I know I don’t speak on this part of my process much. My trauma response has always been to not acknowledge my experiences. Especially publicly, because it’s terrifying to me. I’ve always chosen to silently process and push through.
Im thankful for all the healing and strength my process has brought to my life. As well as the amazing opportunities it’s given me. These new pieces are a reflection of my gratitude and an ode to the times my art has kept me connected to this world, when I felt completely alone, or in the thick of healing - And for that, and my community, I’m forever grateful.
Today I look back and nod to these sentiments in appreciation as I continue to move forward in this journey
